We are a 501c3 animal rescue that is dedicated to improving the lives of animals in our area and abroad. We work diligently to save these animals from euthanasia at local shelters and/or a depraved life on our streets. Our goal is to take these abandoned animals from "stray" to companion. We do so by working closely with local shelters, municipalities and other rescue organizations in order to provide proper food, housing and veterinary care while simultaneously working to promote these beautiful creatures to potential adopters.
We also intend to focus a great deal of effort on promoting and providing spay/neuter programs to our locale through education of the public and partnership with capable organizations in order to provide incentives to the community for helping us "plug the hole" by having their pets altered. We also intend to push for stricter adherence to the animal cruelty laws already in place by asking for harsher penalties for violations. Finally, we will work toward a breeding moratorium for our area, stopping all "backyard breeding", at least till such a time as we see our streets, shelters and rescues no longer over-run by neglected animals.
This is a huge undertaking, and we cannot do this alone. Which is why it is also our mission to form partnerships with other like-minded individuals in facing, and overcoming, these difficult issues. It is our belief that everyone contributing a little will accomplish a lot. To do this we have to be selfless in our relationships, as well as in our pursuit to help these precious creatures. Being kind to one another is the cornerstone of everything we are trying to accomplish here. Without that...it all falls apart.
Our mission, therefore, is to honor God in everything we do; from helping the animals to dealing with one another. If this sounds like a team you'd like to be a part of we would love to have you. This world surely needs more Heroes!
The last thing I thought I would be doing at 46 yrs old is starting an animal rescue and returning to college to pursue a DVM license, but the fact is that protecting the defenseless and being a voice for those who have none is in my nature. I am committed to doing my best to provide these precious creations with every chance at having a good life.
This woman is the backbone of our organization. Her extensive knowledge of animals comes from years of experience and time spent learning under an excellent veterinarian. Her creativity and strong work ethic make her a valuable asset to the team. I may be the president, but she's the boss
For being a retiree, Gretta works harder than most people I know. Her many years as a nurse produced a skill set that allows her to perform at a level far beyond what might be expected from a volunteer board member. Her deep love for animals combined with her ability to consistently press on regardless of opposition makes her irreplaceable. Gretta is a true HERO.
Fonda has been a productive member of this community and a dear friend to us for years. She has no problem speaking her mind, and her integrity is above reproach. Her ability to recognize and speak the truth is in her nature and makes her the perfect choice for treasurer; assuring her that she'd never have to pick up puppy poop was my closer. We are extremely grateful to have her on our team.
HEAR is a non-profit animal rescue that was formed out of necessity in response to a shared passion for protecting and providing for animals who have been abandoned, rejected and/or abused. Our team is committed to ensuring that each animal in our care receives everything they need in order to live a happy, full life.
We have a lot to do in order to bring this place up to par. For now, it will serve to board a small number of emergency cases and very short-term shelter rescues. We are working diligently to make the necessary improvements.
We have a wide variety of adoptable animals available at HEAR, including dogs and cats. All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. We also spend time working with the dogs in our care, teaching them the basics and introducing them to a life of consistency and security, thereby cultivating a relationship of mutual respect.
We offer a variety of training classes to help your new pet adjust to their new home. Our classes cover basic obedience, housebreaking, and even some fun tricks to teach your pet. Ask about our specialized training for dogs with behavioral issues. We have access to trainers with years of experience assessing and rehabilitating dogs with characteristics and habits learned through life without someone caring for them properly. We take great pleasure in giving your new dog the opportunity to gain a new confidence through positive reinforcement training.
We believe in finding the perfect match between our rescue animals and their forever homes. Our adoption process is thorough and personalized to ensure the best possible outcome for both the animal and the adopter.

We believe that if we all do a little we can accomplish a lot. We do not think that everybody has the same talents, skills or gifts, but we know that everybody has something positive they can bring to the table. Every single contribution to what we are working to accomplish at HEAR is necessary and greatly appreciated.
As of April 7th, 2024, I began sleeping outside with the dogs in the hopes of raising awareness of the growing problem of animal neglect here in Evangeline Parish and to raise funds for a much needed facility here on our 18 acre lot. The area we've been using to date is an open-air airplane hangar with a severely damaged roof. These dogs are subject to the heat, cold and rain. They are exposed to the heartworm carrying mosquitoes. Their kennels have no drainage and are extremely difficult to keep sanitized.
Our new facility will come with room for 35 dogs/puppies. It will be climate controlled and have proper drainage. We have included a vetting room in the design which will serve our dogs and the community as a proper venue for regular spay/neuter clinics. We have also included a grooming room, a puppy area, a quarantine/intake building and a place for nursing moms and their pups.
I chose to sleep outside because it is something I believe everyone can relate to. It is hard to imagine cleaning kennels, administering medications, washing 60 bowls twice a day, etc. (The laundry list of chores we do daily). I pray that by committing to being outside with the pups, sharing in the difficulties they face, 24/7 365 days a year will peak the interest of the heroes out there with the ability and desire to see our furry friends have what they truly deserve...the best chance at a life with their family.

At HEAR we are not looking for donors; we are looking for partners. We're looking for people who share our passion of providing better circumstances for the animals we, as people, have failed.
A few dollars a month may not seem like much, but in our hands it will go a long way; especially when combined with contributions from like passionate people.
Become a monthly partner, and be an important part of the team working to bring these unwanted pets to their new homes.
If you are interested in giving some of your time to these pups just give us a call so we can get you on the schedule.
